Symposium Agriculture

> Symposium Agriculture

From 29 to 31 October 2003, in the context of its 150th anniversary celebration, the Chamber of Agriculture organised a symposium on the theme " Agriculture in Mauritius: Evolution and Prospects".

The opening session was attended by the Prime Minister, Hon. P. Bérenger, and the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of finance and Minister of Agriculture, Hon. P. Jugnauth, who delivered both a speech on that occasion. The guest speaker was Mr Joseph Daul, Member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the Agricultural and Rural Development Commission of the European Parliament.

The symposium, which was attended by some 440 participants, was aimed at encouraging an exchange of views on the various aspects of agricultural activities in the country as well as its development prospects. The agricultural sector plays indeed an important role in Mauritius. Beyond fundamental economic considerations and the primary role of providing an adequate food security level to the nation, agricultural activities ensure also rural development, environment preservation, landscape embellishment, water resources management and energy production. Seven foreign and twenty-eight local experts covered these topics during the six sessions of the symposium.
