97% of sugar exports sold on the EU market in 2006

In the December 2006 Sugar News Bulletin, figures concerning the marketing of sugar in Mauritius during 2006 (calendar year) show that 542,116 tonnes of sugar were exported, mainly to the EU market. Of that tonnage, 93% (505,200 tonnes) were destined to the United Kingdom, our main export outlet.

A volume totalling 525,935 tonnes, representing 97% of total sugar exports, were exported on the European market, of which 13,653 tonnes to the United Kingdom under the Special Preferential Sugar (SPS) Agreement and the remaining tonnage under the Sugar Protocol. The United Kingdom remains by far our largest buyer, with 93% (505,200 tonnes) of total exports, followed by Germany (5,248 tonnes).

Moreover, 5,397 tonnes of sugar, representing 1% of total exports, were sold on the US market. About 10,784 tonnes (2% of total exports) were delivered on the world market, of which 3,615 and 1,965 tonnes to Switzerland and Israel respectively, which thus constituted our largest buyers on the world market.

With regard to the local market, consumption of sugar stood at 40,922 tonnes, which were imported from South Africa and Belgium.
